CO2 laser resurfacing uses a 10,600 nm laser to vaporize the outer skin and heat the dermis; wrinkles flatten, loose skin tightens and new collagen forms (PMID 8629842). It is used for fine and moderate wrinkles around the mouth and eyes and for sun-damaged skin, over the whole surface (fully ablative) or in narrow columns with untreated skin between them (fractional) (PMID 17311274).
